Chipmaker Nvidia showcased a high-performance automotive pc designed to advance processing of in-vehicle leisure and automatic driving features.
The expertise was unveiled Tuesday on the firm’s GTC occasion in San Jose, Calif. Analysts say the pc is designed to maintain Nvidia forward of rival Intel and its Mobileye automotive chip subsidiary.
Nvidia’s newest tech, known as Drive Thor, can management automated driving, driver-assist programs, infotainment, digital instrument clusters, occupant-monitoring and extra from a single pc. This permits a number of car features on a single system-on-chip as a substitute of spreading them throughout a number of digital management models, reducing prices and streamlining growth.
Drive Thor follows different Nvidia tech advances that debuted this 12 months, together with a graphics processing unit known as Hopper and a central processing unit known as Grace.
“What they’ve done with Thor is taken Grace and Hopper and put those onto a single SOC along next-generation technology they haven’t detailed yet,” mentioned Sam Abuelsamid, an analyst at Guidehouse Insights.
Drive Thor has a processing pace of 254 trillion operations per second, in contrast with 176 for Mobileye’s most up-to-date IQ Ultra automotive pc, Abuelsamid mentioned. Qualcomm hasn’t but introduced the processing pace of its newest Snapdragon Digital Chassis.
“I expect Qualcomm will be announcing something fairly soon, and Snapdragon Digital Chassis is getting its first production application this year,” Abuelsamid mentioned.
