Imagining the future and cultivating new talent. This is what drives the SAIC Design International Challenge, the competition organised by the Chinese giant and now in its thirteenth edition. Shao Jingfeng, Chief Design Officer of SAIC Motor R&D Innovation Headquarters, highlighted how almost half the young creatives now working for the company began their journey through this contest. “Our ultimate ambition? To elevate Chinese design into a global benchmark for the next hundred years of our company’s history”, Shao says. Over 200 projects were submitted to this year’s challenge, created by designers from over 60 universities around the world.

SAIC Design Challenge 2025
Gu Xirao, Luxun Academy of Fine Arts – First place

The first prize went to Gu Xirao from the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts. This rising talent won over the jury with a project that translated the theme “Diversity and Symbiosis”, and the spirit of the Roewe brand, into a compelling narrative. Gu Xirao presented two concept vehicles: the Wen Tian, designed for astronauts on space missions, and the Tan Lu, designed for those who spend much of their daily lives on the road. The interior of the Wen Tian is based on the idea of a second home in orbit, with sweeping glass surfaces for stargazing, and interior finishes inspired by galactic patterns: the aim was to transform the astronauts’ workplace into a comfortable space while preserving a visual connection to the Earth.

SAIC Design Challenge 2025
Xin Fengming, Jiling University – Second place
SAIC Design Challenge 2025
Chen Hao, Shanghai Jao Tong University – Second place tied

The Tan Lu project, by contrast, takes the opposite approach, merging aerospace imagery into urban mobility. The vehicle features textures reminiscent of the lunar surface and an infotainment system that allows passengers to follow space operations live. Its aim is to make technology more accessible and engaging, transforming the daily commute into an experience symbolically linked to the concept of exploration.

European winners

SAIC Design Challenge 2025
Hanil Kim, Coventry University – First place
SAIC Design Challenge 2025
Joseph Metni, RCA – Second place
SAIC Design Challenge 2025
Will Howells, Coventry University – Third place

Second prize went to Xin Fengming of Jilin University and Chen Hao of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the honour being presented by Zhang Liang and Yu Jingmin Board Members of SAIC Passenger Vehicle. Their project – focusing respectively on the coexistence of autonomous vehicles and pedestrians, and on new modular spaces for shared mobility – explored the role young designers play in addressing issues of sustainability, safety and social transformation.

A small car with immense potential, the K-Car is typically Japanese with really compact overall dimensions (3400x1480x2000 mm). Could it also be an effective answer to the mobility needs of European urban areas in the near future?
The students of the Transportation Design course at the IED in Turin have been trying to answer this question in their theses in collaboration with Suzuki, which focused this year’s brief on the concept of a European K-Car for 2035.
“This project provided students with an important opportunity to work their way round the constraints presented by a predetermined package, an increasingly rare situation in the thesis phase where there is often a tendency to leave students maximum freedom of expression at the expense of their problem-solving skills. Finding the right balance between creativity and limitations is in fact an extremely useful training experience, especially when they have a job in mind”, explained Michele Albera, course coordinator who, together with lecturer Fulvio Fantolino, guided the students in how they defined and developed their proposals.

‘To Do’ by Irene Bonino, Matteo Capezzuoli, Gianmarco Engelbrecht, Gabriele Fioretto, Giulio Romano

IED Torino Suzuki projects

This design responds to the desires of Generation Alpha (i.e. people born in 2012 and thereafter) characterised by sleek, flowing shapes that merge seamlessly into a large customisable rear sphere, much like selecting skins in popular video games. Thanks to the four electric motors on the wheels, the living space can be laid out to accommodate all the interior elements, these too inspired by the world of gaming, such as the seats that can be rotated towards the virtual screen and the steering wheel that transforms into a joystick.

‘Ma’ by Lorenzo Benzoni, Marco Picchi, Riccardo Tulino, Gloria Vida

IED Torino Suzuki projects

A two-seater spider that looks back nostalgically to the golden age of the motor car, when the fascination of engines was undisputed and passion guided the end user’s approach. This iconic, minimalist design can be customised using the countless options that the customer can add over the course of time, rather than when the purchase is made, to fit in with evolving tastes and needs.

‘Maru’ by Jungtaek Cho, Yu-Li Tsai, Szymon Piotr Zakielarz

IED Torino Suzuki projects

Agile and compact, this multi-purpose vehicle is ideal for urban mobility (of people and goods), but also for short trips and journeys in the countryside. The dynamic and transformable layout, inside and out, is built around three key concepts: reciprocity, stimulating the connection between people and their surroundings; adaptability, thanks to the multiple charging options and accessories for every type of journey; and the absence of constraints, guaranteed by its crossover nature.

‘Suzu_K’ by Matteo Bego, Mattia Chiodo, Gabriele Lattanzi, Damiano Micciché

IED Torino Suzuki projects

This design is inspired by the arcade gaming stations of the 1990s, not only in terms of its shape, but also to evoke the playful and immersive experience they introduced. To add character and originality to the car’s sculpted and rigorous aesthetic, the team incorporated clear references to Pac-Man, one of the most iconic video games of all time.

‘Toki’ by Roberto Baio, Luca Carlino, Andrea De Marinis, Fabrizio Negro, Gabriele Rossetto

IED Torino Suzuki projects

Compact shapes, optimised proportions and friendly styling are the ingredients of this concept that revolves around finding the right balance between work and play. The cute expression – given by the circular front headlights – characterises the front, while the interior is defined by how the space is organised. The attention to the customization possibilities presupposes three available setups.

The yacht design world is rapidly evolving, and the contamination with other design areas, now increasingly common, increases experimentation and stimulates research. With this in mind, IED in Turin launched the Master’s programme in Yacht Design at the beginning of 2022 with the coordination of Federica Bertolini, Design Director of Azimut Benetti Group, and designer Michele Albera, whom we met at the conclusion of the first year of the course.

“It was a very interesting experience that allowed our students to deal with two customers. On the one hand, Rossinavi, one of the most innovative brands in today’s nautical industry, and on the other, Poltrona Frau, a symbol of craftsmanship and Made in Italy tradition”, he says. “The development of the end-of-course theses involved students in a comprehensive and realistic work that took into consideration all key aspects in the conception and design of a “one-off” yacht, taking as a reference a famous character as the fictional boat owner”.

Twelve young people were involved from educational backgrounds in Architecture, Interior Design and Graphic Design who worked on three projects divided into teams of four followed by the coordinators and faculty involved, together with: Federico Rossi, Rossinavi COO at Rossinavi and Marco Gaspari, Head of Sales, Contract & Marine Business Unit of Poltrona Frau.

“Hermione” inspired by the actress Emma Watson

IED Torino, Yacht

A fascinating and original proposal, attentive to Rossinavi’s styles, but oriented toward their future evolution. Here every detail was designed ad hoc, from the surfaces to the technical elements and interiors, for which the students designed a veritable furniture collection. Interesting attention paid to the role of light and lighting design that complements the concept.

IED Torino, Yacht

“Inception” inspired by the actor Leonardo di Caprio

IED Torino, Yacht

The broadside with the eye-shaped glazing is certainly the highlight of this project, an unexpected and spectacular aesthetic solution, particularly in the nighttime solution with the luminous frame emphasising the element in the dark. The spa and sauna with distinctive furnishings, the feng shui-inspired elements, and the introduction of gardens, unusual on boats, make this a sophisticated and original proposal.

IED Torino, Yacht

“Halley” inspired by the racing driver Sebastian Vettel

IED Torino, Yacht

More traditional in its management of space, both externally and internally, this proposal is a tribute to sportiness. It places emphasis on a style strongly influenced by automotive design, with a sharp, taut bow that gives rise to aggressive, streamlined lines that generate the architecture and characterise its proportions.

The students of the last year of the Master in Transportation Design a.y. 20/21 at IED Turin, during the final stages of the Thesis project in collaboration with Alpine, take part in an outstanding workshop. In order to design an Alpine SUV in full harmony with the surrounding landscape, at more than two thousand meters of altitude, an unusual design centre has been simulated with the goal of sharing interactions and synergies of ideas.  This workshop gave them the opportunity to share creative ideas, to experiment the concept of transversal skills and working in teams, beyond the typical design centre environment.

The workshop took place in Alta Val Susa at La Marmotta refuge, Project Partner. The suggestive location, situated at 2,420 metres of altitude, has a stunning view of the mountains and is completely immersed in the surrounding natural landscape facilitated the activities of the workshop, dedicated to the Alpine for the design of an “off the track” Crossover. The core of the Master Thesis project is: to read in an off-road way the spirit of the French car manufacturer, never seen before in a similar vehicle segment.

IED Torino, Workshop immersivo ad alta quota

Far from the contest they are used to working in on a daily basis, the international bunch of students rediscovered the thrill of using traditional design tools, creating the sketches through pencils, markers and blocks of drawing paper. They were accompanied and guided in this experience by the IED team formed by: Michele Albera, Master’s Coordinator, Masato Inoue, Master’s Thesis Project Coordinator, Riccardo Balbo, IED Academic Director and Paola Zini, Director of IED Turin.

The technical sponsor of the project was the brand Kappa, which equipped the students with Mountain Kits.

Lightness and sustainability of materials. The topic chosen for development during the first semester of the Master in Industrial Design, specialising in mobility, at the FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences originated in respect for these parameters. The purpose of the assignment was to make young designers more sensitive to the use of natural materials, with the aim in this case of increasing the use of wood in the construction of a vehicle. Students could choose between two objects pertaining to the topic: designing a sports car with the Audi TT as the maximum dimensional reference parameter, or a low-floor city bus. Wood was therefore to be one of the vehicle’s structural elements and the work had to be approached in such a way that the use of this material was predominant and recognisable in all designs.

WoodC.A.R. Audi Rebellion di Frieder Heitmann, Dominik Lavorato

The modular Rebellion design allows for individual user scenarios in which the front-seat passenger is equal. A shock absorber made of a wood-metal composite provides driving pleasure. It can be adapted to the track situation and the driving style.

IED Turin students get the the opportunity to participate at the restyling of the new Ikea space, dedicated to green and relaxation. The students of the Interior Design Course were chosen to rethink the spaces of the Glass House of the Turin shop.

IED Torino

This is the first collaboration between IED and Ikea and was established with the aim of rethinking the customer’s feelings when buying in the Glass House. The cube was the element of design preferred by students and has been applied in different places to create a link between nature and artificiality.

IED Torino

The collaboration between IED and Ikea points out the potential of the young people in finding new and fresh solutions.

Istituto Europeo di Design – in cooperation with Quattroruote and Pininfarina – presented Scilla at the 87th edition of Geneva Motorshow. This concept car was created and developed by the students of the 2015/16 Master in Transportation Design of Turin IED as a degree thesis project.

In Scilla the idea of lightness is at first perceived and then patented, just as veil laid down on an object reveals its shape. Lightness implies also reducing the impact on the environment-through the choice of sustainable/innovative materials-and disengagement by stylistic and formal schemes.

IED SCILLA

Scilla is a semi-autonomous driving vehicle with an innovative 1+1 seats layout, inspired by the world of aeronautics. It is powered by an electric plug-in/plug-off power train combined with rear wheels brush-less engines that allows good traction and control on the road. Protected by an innovative shell structure, its occupants can experience the emotion and pleasure of driving and project themselves into a hypothetical 2030 scenario. In fact, Scilla was conceived as a glider on the road, inside which one can distance himself from daily life. One of the distinguishing features is the man-machine interaction: the wheel, just like a human being, monitors the driving and is able to detect dangerous or critical situations.

IED SCILLA

The students, supervised by their coordinator Alessandro Cipolli, undertook a creative path that simulates the one followed by contemporary automotive design centres. Each student made a proposal and the ones that best met the requirements for the exteriors or interiors were selected for the final version. Finally the whole class created a core team to complete the project and realize it on 1:1 scale.

The show car was manufactured by NCS-New Cast Services main sponsor for 2017 and partner of Istituto Europeo di Design for prototyping. However other partners supported the project on the technical side: AM Costruzione modelli, CAD Evolution, CMS Industries, Dassault Systèmes, Freeland, OZ Racing and Pirelli.

The Design Academy project was organized by Renault Design and developed under the lead of Patrick Lecharpy (VP Advanced Design and Head of Renault Design India studios) and Project Manager Luciano Bove, (Design Academy Head of Program and Advanced Design Manager). This project is in cooperation with Laurent Biguet’s Renault Design Academy team.

Renault Design has a long history of ties with Design Schools worldwide, and has offered and continues to offer internships to talented students in its design studios across the global design organization (France, Korea, Romania, Brazil, India, and China).

“I asked Luciano, who is always close to the Design Education & Design Schools, to think about how to put together our needs to find real talents & students’ needs to find a job.

Luciano came up with a very cool idea: a sort of car designer’s talent show! In reality we will offer internships, but the candidates will be followed in a very professional and unique way.” (Patrick Lecharpy)

Luciano Bove explains a little more: “We decided to make an extra step by deepening the internship experience for the best young design talents that may want to work with us.

To do so, we put together a team of 12 professional designers and managers (from France & India).

Currently we are in the process of receiving all candidatures and in less than 2 weeks we will proceed to the final selection of 6 best candidates. We will offer a 6 months Internship Contract with a nice package and on the 3rd of April this adventure will start.

Our objective is to offer, at the end of the experience, a full time designer job contract to the 2 best finalists (Chennai and /or Mumbai Design studios). All 6 candidates will receive a Professional Internship Certificate.

With this experience we would also like to make a sort of live coverage of the daily activities, a sort of live show (via social media), to create a strong tie between the 6 interns and our followers to make of it a full and exciting experience”.
